Sugar in the EU is heavily regulated by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and particularly the Common Market Organisation (CMO) for Sugar and is denominated in Euro. For UK sugar buyers the need to convert Euro into Sterling therefore creates a currency risk that can play havoc with company budgets. Sugar buyers therefore have to keep a watchful eye on the currency as well as the commodity markets.
We were instrumental in helping to develop specific financial instruments that have enabled sugar buyers to manage those currency risks. The knowledge and understanding of those risks and the various instruments available to hedge them is available to customers who wish to provide their businesses with some degree of stability.
From 1992 to the end of 1998, EU sugar support prices in the UK were converted from ecu into sterling using "green rates". These were abolished throughout the EU from 1st January 1999, and replaced in the UK by the "Unofficial Sugar Conversion Rate" (USCR).
The USCR has the potential to change every 14 days depending on the value of Sterling against the Euro and whether at 1.30pm every second Thursday that value is more than 1% different (+ or -) to the previous fortnight.
On our website we will be providing weekly updates on the USCR changes. Please contact us if you would like this information to be emailed to you on a weekly basis.
